Saskatchewan Party Government Flip-Flops On All Party Agreement For Chief Electoral Officer

The governing Saskatchewan Party has some explaining to do to all of the other political parties in the province. The Liberal Party of Saskatchewan, The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, The Sask New Democratic Party and The Green Party all want to know why the previously agreed to candidate for Chief Electoral Officer has now been overturned.

It seems that the agreed to candidate for the office (who is currently the deputy Chief Returning Officer - acting in the position of CRO) has been vetoed by the Saskatchewan Party Caucus!

CBC is reporting that a Member of the Saskatchewan Party Caucus may be under investigation by the office of the Chief Electoral Office and is asking if the flip-flop is connected.

"Four of Saskatchewan's political parties are asking why the Saskatchewan Party government has rejected a candidate for chief electoral officer who was recommended by a bipartisan committee of the legislature. Earlier this year, the legislature's board of internal economy — which has NDP and Saskatchewan Party members — recommended that Dave Wilkie, the acting chief electoral officer, get the job on a permanent basis.

However, the board's recommendation was later rejected by the Saskatchewan Party caucus. No one has yet been appointed to the job. In the legislature Monday, NDP MLA Frank Quennell asked Justice Minister Don Morgan why the Saskatchewan Party changed its mind. Quennell suggested it might be because an unnamed government MLA is being investigated by Wilkie about spending."

-Accidental Deliberations has more .....

While in opposition the SP proved it could be nasty and underhanded. This does not surprise me in the least. Should this speculation prove unfounded it is at least certainly lousy optics for them and no political party or politician wants to be the subject of a police investigation.

It is pretty rude for the PIP to overrule an all-party consensus just because they can. It's sort of like breaking your word. They do that a lot though.
