I Can't Believe That Ben's In Montreal Is Gone!
I'm a westerner who has spent a lot of time in Montreal over the years. One of my favourite places in the entire city was Ben's deli. I know that it closed in December but the fact that it will now fall to the wrecking ball, has inspired me to post one last post in praise of this gastronomic and historic shrine.
The kosher food at Ben's was exquisite. I worked my way through the menu over the years. The Montreal smoked meat was always hot and stacked high on the finest rye bread. Some mustard, the obligatory pickle, that crisp coleslaw. The '40 era cutlery and plates. Sigh. Usually late late at night or early early in the wee hours of the morning after probably a beer or two more then I needed. Hungry. Needing to end the day. Sigh.
